emory advantage is emory university's financial aid initiative to help students from families with annual total incomes of $100,000 or less who demonstrate a need for financial aid. the program reduces the amount of money borrowed to pay for an undergraduate emory degree. the goal is to make an emory education attainable for any qualified student, regardless of income.
the loan replacement grant (lrg) replaces loans for dependent undergraduate students whose families' annual total incomes are $50,000 or less. grants replace the federal subsidized stafford loan award typically provided in the aid package. the eligible grant amount represents the student's loan self-help portion of the aid award. funds may be used to cover educational expenses including tuition, room, and board.
the loan cap program (lcp) caps cumulative federal subsidized stafford loan debt at $15,000 for domestic, dependent undergraduate students whose families' total annual incomes are between $50,000 and $100,000. with the loan cap program, students receive a standard financial aid award (which includes loans) until $15,000 in federal subsidized stafford loan debt is accrued. the loan threshold includes debt obtained for emory enrollment only. after the loan cap is reached, grants will be provided to replace federal subsidized stafford loan eligibility.
both programs are available to eligible undergraduate dependent students at emory university studying in emory college, oxford college, goizueta business school, and nell hodgson woodruff school of nursing. these programs are available to students earning their first undergraduate degree; students earning a second undergraduate degree are not eligible to receive aid through these programs. summer term is considered a non-standard academic term and is not included in the emory advantage. students are expected to make satisfactory academic progress in order to receive aid.
there is no separate application for the emory advantage program. all students who apply for institutional need-based financial aid will be considered for this program. continuing emory students must submit an application for financial aid each year to assess current eligibility.
a family's entire financial portfolio, including income, assets, and other earnings will be considered using institutional methodology. the program is capped at a $100,000 annual income with a goal of providing assistance to as many families as possible in a fair and equitable manner while meeting demonstrated need.
full-time attendance is normally required to receive institutional grant funding. exceptions to this policy may be made if a student is attending a final term, and full-time attendance is not required to meet graduation requirements.
if you meet the criteria for the emory advantage program, your financial aid award will include a reasonable amount of federal work-study. a work component is considered part of the student's self-help expectation.
