dear ms. tancredi:

last week, my family and i dined at your restaurant while travlling in singapore. we are always looking to try another new restaurant. we liked the way your place looked, so we went inside to have dinner.

the place was crowded and the waiters seemed very busy. after a long wait, we were finally seated. soon, we ordered the food. we waited an even longer time for the food to arrive. frustrated, i got the attention of a waiter passing by. i asked what was going on with our meals. he went and checked with the chef. it turned out our waiter had forgotten to place your order. rightfully angry, we left the restaurant.

forgetting a customers order is a big problem. if that type of thing continues, you are going to lose your customers. heres a suggestion. require the waiters to actually write down the orders. in such a busy place, it would be impossible to remember them all.

sincerely,

shiwen cai

to whom it may concern,

i am writing the letter for the purpose of conveying my deepest concern about the white paper.

it must be pointed out that the current situation is going from bad to worse. accordingly, its urgent for us to take effective measures. in the first place, we should enhance the publics awareness of the gravity of it. in the second, we should appeal to the relevant department to set up strict regulations against it. [for example, changing more on the plastic bags]. in addition, mass media should help devise ways of easing the bad trend.

thanks a lot for paying due attention to the letter. looking forward to seeing some new changes in the society soon.

yours truly,

12 may 20xx

dear sir,

i am writing to ap* for a british council scholarship to study in britain. i did my five years basic training in medicine at shanghai university. after this i successfully completed a one-year postgraduate course in ophthalmology at the peoples general hospital, where i am at present serving a two-year probation in the eye clinic.

as a result of the publication in 2003 of my article in new scientist entitled ^v^soft and rigid contact lenses ^v^, which was based on a survey of 37 patients over 6 months, i made contact with dr. li ming of the capital hospital and dr. ma li of the university college hospital. i have received their help and advice with my current research project, which is a two-year survey of the acceptance of various types of contact lenses in 200 patients.

despite their help, i feel that i cannot make real progress in this field unless i can actually have day-to-day contact with these specialists. i would therefore like to continue my research at either the capital hospital or the uch as soon as my probationary period here is completed, and i would like to study in britain for two years.

i enclose a detailed curriculum vitae and an offprint of my article, together with two letters of recommendation from dr. li ming and dr. ma li.

yours faithfully,

lily chen

20 june 2006

dear mr. seaton,

thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to london. it was the first time that i had seen the tower or any of the other famous sights. if id gone alone, i couldnt have seen nearly as much, because i wouldnt have known my way about.

the weather was splendid on that day, which i thought was rare. i still remember some people told me that in britain there was weather and no climate. during the same day, it might snow in the morning, rain at noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. so i think i was lucky.

i think the river trip was the best thing of all. london really came alive for me as we saw it from the thames during that wonderful journey down to greenwich. it was all tremendously exciting - a day that i shall never forget.

thank you for giving me such a great birthday treat.

yours sincerely,

good writing, bad writing () despite modern peoples desire for ease, americans sometimes think of the language, grammar, vocabulary, and official language they use, and, as with other issues, they fall into two categories, including everyone from ordinary people to professional writers. they use words in the right way and there are many wrong ways. people think that the right way is clearer, r and more logical, so it is better to prevent mistakes and confusion.

good words are easier to read. it provides a pleasant combination of sound and feeling. opposing this view of the majority is against the theory of a few people.

they are professional linguists. they deny the correctness of language, deny the correctness of language, anyone they denounce all attempts to guide linguists to choose. of course, there are also factions of struggle.

but in the idea that language is a natural growth, interference is criminal. they are one. in their argument, people find social equality (all languages and forms are one) these beliefs further show that the desire for the right, that is, the idea of good or bad in language, is left to linguists by the aristocracy and the times, and that change is the only rule that they believe must be abided by and equal to life, and that their critics are the clock reversal, the enemy of , and the threat to ^v^life^v^.

dear my friend,

i am here writing to your to express my gratitude to you for congratulation.

you mentioned how to improve the translation ability. now i would like to offer you some suggestions.

the most important factor to be considered is that you must grasp a of vocabulary, which is the foundation for translation. secondly, you can try to practice translation everyday. after your translation, you can compare your translation with the given answer. last but not the least, you must pay very close attention to the difference between the two languages. differences between laguges must be considered when you are translating.

i am looking forward to meeting you in the near future. then, we can have a talk face to face. i sincerely hope that my suggestions can be constructive to you.

truly yours

dear mary,

thanks for your last letter. im so glad that you have been able (at last! ) to arrange a holiday in australia. as i fear i wont be able to meet you at the airport when you arrive, nor will i be able to be home until later in the afternoon, so here are some instructions and suggestions.

there is a bus from the airport to the city. it is much cheaper than a cab. take the bus to the city and ask to get off at town hall railway station.

to get to my place in the eastern suburbs you have three options. you can either take a cab, a bus or the train. i suggest you take the train, since the airport bus will leave you right at the station. get off at cliff station. from there you can either walk to my place (about ten minutes) or take a taxi. probably you should take a taxi as you will have luggage.

yours,

dear tom,

how are you doing? how time flies! it has been half a year since i came back to china. i miss you so much!

every time i catch sight of our photos taken in america, i just cant help thinking of what you have done for me. it was so kind of you to help me practice my spoken english patiently. besides, you taught me a lot of advanced grammar, which really surprised me. actually, i shall always remember you shared with me many outstanding english novels, considering that i am extremely interested. nothing will be able to erase our wonderful memories, and i will cherish them forever.

by the way, could you please tell me mr. smith’s telephone number and his email address? i would like to turn to him for some help.

what’s more, i remember you are crazy about traditional chinese culture. the spring festival is around the corner. why not come to enjoy it? i promise you won’t regret.

looking forward to your reply.

best wishes!

dear mr. seaton, thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to london. it was the first time that i had seen the tower or any of the other famous sights. if id gone alone, i couldnt have seen nearly as much, because i wouldnt have known my way about. the weather was splendid on that day, which i thought was rare.

i still remember some people told me that in britain there was weather and no climate. during the same day, it might snow in the morning, rain at noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. so i think i was lucky.

i think the river trip was the best thing of all. london really came alive for me as we saw it from the thames during that wonderful journey down to greenwich. it was all tremendously exciting - a day that i shall never forget.

thank you for giving me such a great birthday treat.

this semester, we got the subject of 《offer&counter-offer》 , i also remember until now our group comes on stage performances scene, i can only use two words to describe: bad and awkward. because we do not have well the preparation, cause then the situation of the mess. on the ppt content is directly from on-line duplication and glue. but takes me who lectures not to have well the preparation, is sim* is on site to display. at that time stood on the stage feeling is really very bad, i only wanted a bit faster to finish lecture, hurry to leave stage. that experience told me “the full preparation” importance.

on your class we feel relaxed, we don’t have the tedious knowledge spot and heavy homework. some are only your speaking with confidence with each kind of small story, you used your personal experience to teach our some truths.

this semester, my impression quite deep is “transportation” this chapter. i have learned the transport expense computing mode, and in the transportation process the risk undertakes the way. the different transport mode and the method of settling accounts, will have the dissimilar transport expense and the risk. actually in “the international trade”, i has also studied some international shippings knowledge, but in yours class, i studied each technical expression in english. for example:cargo freight, direct vessel, entir voyage and so on.

oh, oh, i am really could not write again about this semester’s studies and thought, because spoke the truth, i very few listened earnestly, especially in the university. therefore teacher i’m sorry very much, this semesters work i stopped. wishes you and your family member has the happiness content life!

dear mr. seaton,,

thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to london. it was the first time that i had seen the tower or any of the other famous sights. if id gone alone, i couldnt have seen nearly as much, because i wouldnt have known my way about.

the weather was splendid on that day, which i thought was rare. i still remember some people told me that in britain there was weather and no climate. during the same day, it might snow in the morning, rain at noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. so i think i was lucky.

ithink the river trip was the best thing of all. london really came alive for me as we saw it from the thames during that wonderful journey down to greenwich. it was all tremendously exciting - a day that i shall never forget.

thank you for giving me such a great birthday treat.

yours sincerely,

linda chen
